Jewish History in Enschede

Enschede had a substantial Jewish community in the 19th and early 20th centuries, drawn by the textile industry that dominated the region. The community was disproportionately hard hit during the Second World War — Enschede's proximity to the German border meant deportations began early. Remarkably, the community's rabbi, Leizer Lewi, helped hide more than 100 Jewish families in the Twente countryside, an operation that saved many lives.

The former synagogue on the Prinsestraat has been restored and serves as a cultural centre. A memorial plaque and the old Jewish cemetery preserve some physical traces of the community's history in the city.
