University of Twente Campus

The University of Twente campus on the western edge of the city is set in a park-like landscape of woods, ponds, and grassy spaces, with the university's technical and science buildings scattered among the trees. It is unusual among Dutch universities in being a residential campus rather than an urban scatter of buildings.

The campus is open to visitors and is a pleasant walk or cycle from the city centre. The De Vrijhof cultural centre hosts concerts and events open to the public. The campus also contains the Torentje van Drienerlo, an enigmatic artwork by Wim T. Schippers that is worth seeing specifically for its absurdist logic.

A story
The Torentje van Drienerlo — a slender concrete column 25 metres high with a tiny room on top, created by the Dutch artist Wim T. Schippers in 1979 — stands at the edge of the University of Twente campus. It was built purely as an artwork, with no function. Schippers proposed it as a "useless tower," and its pure purposelessness in the context of a technical university has given it a cult following among architecture and art students.
