De Museumfabriek

De Museumfabriek (formerly the Twentse Welle) is a museum of regional history and culture in the Roombeek district, housed in a building that mixes a converted 19th-century textile factory with modern extensions. The collection covers the textile industry that made Twente prosperous, natural history of the region, and the history of the 2000 fireworks disaster that destroyed this neighbourhood.

The museum is aimed at families and has hands-on sections alongside more conventional displays. The textile industry section is particularly good, giving a sense of how utterly the cotton trade dominated this corner of the Netherlands in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
