Twente Countryside and Cycling

The Twente region around Enschede is one of the most pleasant cycling landscapes in the Netherlands — a gently rolling countryside of forest, farmland, and small villages that is unusual in the generally flat Dutch context. The slight hills (the "Twente hills" are modest by any European standard, but they count in the Netherlands) give the cycling enough variation to be interesting.

Cycling routes from Enschede run north into the Lonneker landscape and east towards the German border, through villages with old farmhouses in the Saxon Twente style — long half-timbered buildings where family and livestock shared the same roof. Day trips by bike into Germany are easy; Gronau is 15 km east.
