Synagogue Enschede is one of the city's most impressive pieces of early-20th-century architecture. Its exterior is already distinctive, but the real reason to visit is the interior: domes, patterned decoration, coloured glass, and a strong Moorish Revival influence create a space unlike Enschede's churches and industrial buildings.
The synagogue also carries the weight of the city's Jewish history, including the destruction of the Second World War and the smaller community that remained afterwards. Check opening arrangements before going, as access is not as straightforward as a public museum, but it is one of Enschede's strongest cultural sights.
