Rijksmuseum Twenthe

The Rijksmuseum Twenthe is the city's flagship museum, with a collection of Dutch and Flemish painting from the 15th century to the present that would be impressive in any city. The Golden Age collection includes works by Jan van Goyen and other 17th-century Dutch masters; the 20th-century section covers Dutch modernism from the early avant-garde to contemporary work.

The building itself is attractive — a 1930s art deco museum house in a park setting north of the old town. Allow two to three hours. The café in the garden is a pleasant stop. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

A story
The Rijksmuseum Twenthe was founded in 1930 by the Van Heek family, textile industrialists who built much of their wealth on the Twente cotton industry. Jan Bernard van Heek donated his collection and a substantial endowment to establish the museum, giving Enschede a gallery of national importance out of proportion to its size. The collection originally focused on Dutch Golden Age painting but has expanded to cover several centuries.
