Metelkova

Metelkova is a self-managed social centre and cultural complex housed in a former Yugoslav army barracks, about ten minutes' walk northeast of the train station. The buildings are covered in murals, sculptures, and improvised architecture assembled over three decades. By day it is quiet and interesting to walk through; by night it becomes Ljubljana's alternative nightlife hub, with several bars and clubs operating in the converted military buildings.

The music tends toward punk, metal, electronic, and underground genres. The crowd is eclectic. Entry to most events involves a small cover charge. Hours vary by venue; the complex typically gets going after midnight. This is not a tourist attraction so much as a functioning cultural institution that happens to be open to visitors.

A story
When the Yugoslav army withdrew from Slovenia after independence in 1991, it left behind an abandoned barracks complex in central Ljubljana. A group of activists and artists occupied the site in 1993 before authorities could demolish it. After a standoff that lasted years, the city eventually accepted the occupation and granted the squat legal status. Metelkova Mesto is now part of Ljubljana's cultural infrastructure — which would have seemed impossible in 1993.
