The Museum of Modern Art, adjacent to the National Gallery on Tomšičeva Street, holds the national collection of Slovenian art from the early twentieth century to the present. The permanent collection includes work from the interwar avant-garde period through the NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst) collective of the 1980s — which achieved international recognition for its deliberately provocative use of totalitarian aesthetics.
The museum also runs a programme of good temporary exhibitions. The new building (completed 2011) connecting to the original 1948 structure has given the museum a more coherent exhibition space.
