Cortijo del Tajo

Cortijo del Tajo is an archaeological site on the western outskirts of Torremolinos where Roman, pre-Roman, and Neolithic remains have been found. It sits in a small valley that has clearly supported human habitation for millennia, and the accumulated layers of settlement make it interesting even for visitors with only a passing interest in archaeology.

The site is not heavily developed for tourism, but you can walk around the perimeter and see the excavated foundations. Interpretive panels explain the sequence of occupation. It is a good complement to the Bajondillo Cave findings — together they show that the coast around Torremolinos has been attractive to humans since prehistoric times.

A story
The site at Cortijo del Tajo includes remains from the Paleolithic through to the Roman period, making it one of the longest-occupied sites in the Málaga area. Roman-era finds include mosaics and the foundations of a substantial villa, suggesting the fertile valley here was cultivated continuously for thousands of years.
