Torre de Pimentel

The Torre de Pimentel is the 14th-century Moorish watchtower from which Torremolinos takes its name. Standing 12 metres high in the middle of the old town, it is one of the few structures that predate the resort era. You can climb to the top at no charge.

The tower was built as part of a coastal defence network designed to warn inland settlements of raids by pirates and corsairs. At its base, channels and chambers once fed a system of water mills drawing from the underground springs that made this stretch of coast habitable long before the modern town existed.

A story
The tower gave the town its name — 'Torremolinos' translates roughly as 'tower of the mills,' a reference to the water mills that once operated at its base, fed by underground springs. The springs were known to the Phoenicians and Romans long before the Moors built the tower in the 14th century.
