Botanical Garden

The university's modern botanical garden, laid out beside the castle

The Botaniska trädgården, not to be confused with Linnaeus's older garden in the city centre, sits at the foot of Uppsala Castle on land donated by King Gustav III in 1787. The collection now covers 34 hectares — far larger than Linnaeus's compact plot — and ranges from formal baroque parterres to dense woodland.

The neoclassical Orangery, built in the 1790s, is the visual centrepiece and houses a café and exhibition space. Behind it, the Tropical Greenhouse shelters palms, orchids, and the famous Victoria water lilies in a humid glass pavilion that is especially welcome in winter. The grounds are free to wander year-round; the greenhouses charge a small fee.

The garden is an easy walk from either the castle or Carolina Rediviva, and makes a logical loop after visiting either.
