Uppsala Castle

Gustav Vasa's pink hilltop fortress where Queen Christina abdicated in 1654.

The pink fortress on the hill above the cathedral was begun by Gustav Vasa in the 1540s and served as a royal residence for over a century. It was here that Queen Christina famously abdicated the Swedish throne in 1654. Today the castle houses the Uppsala Art Museum and hosts cultural events. The grounds offer fine views over the city and the cathedral.
