The Stadsträdgården is Uppsala's main city park, stretching along the eastern bank of the Fyris River just south of the centre. Originally laid out in 1860 as an English-style landscape garden, it remains the daily green space where students sprawl on the grass between lectures and families bring kids to the playground.
In summer, the park hosts a season of free outdoor concerts — Parksnäckan, "the Park Shell" — on an art nouveau bandstand near the river. The lineup leans toward Swedish indie acts and stand-up comedy. A small café operates beside the bandstand and rents rowing boats by the hour.
The park is open year-round and free to enter. The walk from here to the cathedral along the river takes about fifteen minutes and is one of the prettiest urban strolls in central Sweden.
