Fiesch

Valais village at the cable-car foot of the Eggishorn and Aletsch Glacier.

Fiesch is a small Valais village with one big trick: the lift from the railway station climbs straight into the Aletsch Arena, giving easy access to the Eggishorn and one of the best views of the Great Aletsch Glacier.

The village itself is practical rather than pretty by Swiss standards, but that practicality matters. Trains on the Matterhorn Gotthard line, PostBus links, and the cable car meet in one place, so you can step off public transport and be on the mountain quickly.

In summer, Fiesch is for glacier-view hikes, paragliding, and high alpine walks from Fiescheralp. In winter, the same lift system plugs into the Aletsch Arena ski area. The reason to choose Fiesch over better-known resort villages is simple: it is less polished, easier to reach, and very close to the ice.
