DIG — An Archaeological Adventure

A hands-on archaeology experience in a medieval church, operated by the York Archaeological Trust

DIG is a hands-on museum in the former church of St Saviour on St Saviourgate, operated by the York Archaeological Trust — the same organisation responsible for the Jorvik Viking Centre excavations. Visitors work through four archaeological dig pits representing different periods of York's history: Roman, Viking, medieval, and Victorian. The emphasis is participatory rather than display-based: you sift soil, identify finds, and handle reproduction artefacts alongside guides.

The format is primarily aimed at children and school groups, but adults get more out of it than they might expect — the guides are knowledgeable and the pits contain enough genuine information to be interesting beyond the novelty. The church building itself is handsome, and the juxtaposition of a medieval church repurposed as an archaeology experience is rather apt. Admission is charged and timed slots are recommended.
