The York Dungeon is an unashamed tourist attraction — live actors, theatrical sets, jump scares — that covers the nastier episodes of York's past. The show moves through a series of scenes: the Viking raid, the 1190 massacre at Clifford's Tower, the Black Death in medieval York, the hanging judge, Dick Turpin, and Guy Fawkes (who was born in York). It is professionally done and not particularly educational, but if you are travelling with teenagers who need to be entertained, it tends to go down well.
The attraction is located on Clifford Street, near Clifford's Tower, which makes for a certain geographical coherence. Admission is priced at full tourist-attraction rates; booking online in advance saves money and secures a time slot, which matters during peak season when queues form. The serious historical version of most of the same material is available across the road at the Castle Museum, for considerably less money.
