Merchant Taylors' Hall

A 14th-century guildhall still in active use, with an impressive great hall and medieval undercroft

The Merchant Taylors' Hall on Aldwark dates from the 1400s and is one of several medieval guildhalls that survive in York. The Merchant Taylors' Company — the guild of cloth-workers and tailors — built and still owns the hall, making it one of a small number of guildhalls in England still operated by the guild that originally constructed them. The great hall on the upper floor has an impressive timber roof and retains much of its medieval character. The undercroft below is earlier still.

The hall is used for private functions and is not always open to the public, but the exterior on Aldwark is accessible at any time, and open days are held periodically. It sits in the quieter northeastern corner of the old city, away from the main tourist streets, in an area where the medieval street pattern is well preserved. Worth finding if you have spent time at the nearby Treasurer's House or Monk Bar.
