York's Guildhall was built in the 15th century as the meeting place of the city's merchant and craft guilds. Much of what you see today is a careful postwar reconstruction after bombing in 1942, but the hall still gives a strong sense of medieval civic power, especially in its timbered interior and stained-glass window.
