Built in 1906 as the Walker Theatre, this Edwardian Baroque venue was restored and renamed in honour of Winnipeg's most famous rock musician. The interior — ornate plasterwork, gilded boxes, deep red upholstery — is one of the finest surviving theatre interiors in western Canada. It hosts touring concerts, comedy, and occasional opera productions. Even if you don't catch a show, the building is worth the look.
story: > When the Walker opened in 1907, the Winnipeg Tribune declared it "the finest theatre between Toronto and Vancouver." Sarah Bernhardt performed here; so did Harry Houdini. The theatre fell into disrepair by the 1980s but was saved by a major restoration, and renamed for Burton Cummings — lead singer of The Guess Who, who grew up in Winnipeg's North End.
