Kensington Market

Kensington Market is Toronto's most densely layered neighbourhood — a few square blocks west of Spadina and north of Dundas where successive waves of immigration have deposited their food cultures, clothing, and commerce on top of each other without ever completely displacing what was there before. Portuguese fishmongers and West Indian spice shops sit next to vintage clothing stores, artisan cheese shops, and cheap ramen counters.

The market's physical character is distinctive: low Victorian storefronts with hand-painted signs, crates of produce spilling onto the sidewalk, music from open doorways. Tom's Place on Baldwin Street is a Toronto institution for discounted men's suits. The surrounding streets are dense with restaurants from a dozen cuisines at prices that reflect the neighbourhood's student and immigrant customer base.

Pedestrian Sundays from May to October (one Sunday per month) close the neighbourhood to cars entirely, turning it into an outdoor street fair. The Saturday farmers' market and the permanent food shops make this one of the better markets in the city for actual grocery shopping, not just browsing.
