Fort Rouille Monument

Fort Rouille Monument marks the site of a small French trading fort built in the 1750s, when New France was trying to hold its place on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The garrison burned the fort in 1759 while retreating from British forces.

Today the stop is an obelisk and a concrete outline of the old palisade, set near Exhibition Place. It is a modest sight, but a useful reminder that Toronto's story began long before the modern city grid.
