Allan Gardens Conservatory

Victorian greenhouse filled with tropical plants, free and open year-round

Allan Gardens Conservatory is one of Toronto's oldest public parks, with a greenhouse complex that has been here in some form since 1858. The main Palm House, a grand Victorian glass dome built in 1910, is the centrepiece — it contains palms, cycads, and tropical plants that would not survive a Toronto winter outside, maintained at greenhouse temperatures all year. Additional greenhouses hold cacti and succulents, begonias, and seasonal displays.

The conservatory is free and open every day of the year, making it a genuine refuge during Toronto's cold months. On grey January days, stepping into the humid warmth of the Palm House among the tropical plants is a notable pleasure. The park surrounding the greenhouses is pleasant in summer; it is also one of the most inclusive and non-commercial green spaces in the downtown east end.

The main Palm House can be briefly closed for maintenance or events. The surrounding Cabbagetown neighbourhood, one of the city's more intact Victorian residential districts, is worth exploring before or after a visit.
