Village of Yorkville Park

A small urban park with a 650-tonne chunk of the Canadian Shield

Address 115 Cumberland Street, Yorkville

A clever little park running along Cumberland Street, built in the 1990s on the deck above the Bloor-Yorkville subway. Its design divides the narrow strip into a series of garden "rooms," each echoing a Canadian landscape — a pine grove, a wetland, a herbaceous border — laid out in bands that line up with the lot lines of the Victorian houses that once stood here.

The centrepiece is the rock: a single 650-tonne outcrop of the Canadian Shield, more than a billion years old, trucked in from north of the city in pieces and reassembled. People clamber on it, picnic around it, and use the park as a breather between the boutiques. It is one of the more imaginative pieces of public space in the city.
