Carib Cinema

The Carib Cinema at Cross Roads is one of Kingston's most architecturally distinctive buildings — a 1937 art deco cinema that has operated, in various configurations, for almost nine decades. It sits at the busy Cross Roads intersection, where major roads from Downtown, Uptown, Half Way Tree, and the eastern suburbs all converge.

The building has had periods of decline and renovation. In its current form it operates as a multiplex showing current international and Jamaican releases. The exterior — with its curved modernist facade and original signage elements — remains one of the better pieces of pre-war commercial architecture in Kingston. The Cross Roads area around the cinema, though primarily commercial, is one of the better places to observe Kingston's everyday street life without venturing into either the more tourist-facing uptown zones or the more challenging parts of Downtown.

A story
The Carib opened in 1937 as one of the grandest cinema palaces in the Caribbean — an art deco building with a striking facade and an interior designed to give Kingston moviegoers the full Hollywood experience. It was here that many Jamaicans first encountered the American films that would eventually filter back into the music and fashion of the streets, creating the feedback loop between American popular culture and Jamaican creativity that produced reggae, dancehall, and sound system culture.
