Independence Park and National Stadium

Independence Park contains Jamaica's National Stadium, the principal athletics and football venue in the country, along with the National Arena and the Bob Marley statue that stands outside the main entrance. The area around the stadium — Arthur Wint Drive — is also home to several of Kingston's cultural institutions, including the Edna Manley College.

The Bob Marley statue outside the stadium is one of the city's most frequently photographed landmarks — a bronze image of Marley mid-performance, arms raised, dreadlocks extended. It functions as the de facto memorial to Jamaica's most famous citizen and attracts visitors even when nothing is happening at the stadium. When the stadium is active — for football internationals, athletics meetings, or the annual Grand Gala on Independence Day — the surrounding neighbourhood transforms entirely.

A story
The National Stadium opened on August 6, 1962 — Independence Day — and the opening ceremony was attended by Princess Margaret representing the British Crown, and Princess Alice. The stadium's construction was itself a statement: a modern facility built by newly independent Jamaica to host the Central American and Caribbean Games. The 1966 Commonwealth Games were held here — still the biggest multi-sport event Jamaica has ever hosted.
