Arnett Gardens (Jungle)

Arnett Gardens, known universally as Jungle, is a government housing estate in West Kingston that became one of the most famous of the city's "garrison communities" — neighbourhoods where political parties distributed housing and employment in exchange for electoral loyalty, creating densely populated urban zones with their own internal hierarchies and periodic outbreaks of serious violence.

Visiting Jungle independently is not advisable. The neighbourhood has experienced significant security improvements since the 2010s, but it remains a community that functions on local knowledge and local relationships. Organised cultural tours of Kingston's inner-city communities are available from several reputable operators and can provide access to Arnett Gardens in a way that is safe and contextually meaningful. The story of the garrison communities is central to understanding modern Jamaica.

A story
Bob Marley's "Concrete Jungle" was written about Arnett Gardens — a government housing estate in West Kingston built in the 1960s that became, by the 1970s, one of the most politically contested neighbourhoods in the city. The gangs and political patrons who controlled Jungle, as locals call it, were central to the violence that accompanied every election during the garrison politics era. The neighbourhood has a football club — Arnett Gardens FC — that has competed at the top of Jamaican football since the 1970s.
