Cherry Gardens

Cherry Gardens is one of Kingston's most desirable residential districts — a leafy, quiet neighbourhood of substantial homes in the hills east of Constant Spring Road, where the city begins its transition toward the lower Blue Mountains. The area has several good restaurants and the quiet, unhurried atmosphere of established affluence.

The neighbourhood is worth knowing as a destination for some of Kingston's better restaurants and for the sense it gives of how a significant portion of Kingstonians live day-to-day, away from the Downtown story and the music history narrative. The drive through Cherry Gardens and up Barbican Road toward the mountains gives a good picture of Kingston's geography — the city spreading across the Liguanea Plain before hitting the Blue Mountain foothills.

A story
Cherry Gardens and the wider Washington Gardens neighbourhood became Kingston's premier residential address in the post-independence era, when the Jamaican professional class moved away from the older uptown neighbourhoods. The area's winding roads, mature trees, and large properties behind walls are characteristic of the private affluence that coexists with Kingston's famous poverty — visible within minutes of each other in a city of concentrated inequality.
