Up Park Camp

Up Park Camp is the principal military base in Kingston, occupying a prominent position just north of New Kingston and east of the National Stadium. The camp has served as the headquarters of military forces in Jamaica since the late 18th century — first the British Army, and since independence in 1962, the Jamaica Defence Force.

The site is an active military installation and not open to casual visitors, but its history is closely entangled with Jamaica's colonial and post-colonial story. The perimeter walls and the older stone buildings visible from South Camp Road give a sense of the scale of the original British garrison. The Jamaica Military Museum within the camp holds significant collections of colonial-era military history and is occasionally opened for public events and organised tours.

A story
Up Park Camp was the base from which the British Army suppressed the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865, one of the most significant events in Jamaican colonial history. The rebellion, led by Paul Bogle and supported by George William Gordon — both later declared National Heroes — was put down with extraordinary brutality: over 400 people killed, 600 flogged, and 1,000 homes burned. The Governor's response caused such outrage in Britain that he was recalled and tried, though acquitted.
