New Kingston

New Kingston is the commercial and hotel centre of the city — a cluster of office towers, international hotels, banks, and restaurants on the former site of Kingston's racecourse. It lacks the character of the older parts of the city but functions as the most practical base for visitors: most international hotels are here, the area is well lit and patrolled at night, and the main uptown attractions — Devon House, Emancipation Park, the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road — are within walking distance or a short taxi ride.

The Knutsford Boulevard area at the heart of New Kingston has the city's highest concentration of restaurants and bars aimed at the professional class and visiting business travellers. Not particularly atmospheric, but functional and safe. The best use of New Kingston is as a base from which to explore the rest of the city — Downtown, the Blue Mountains, Port Royal — rather than as a destination in itself.

A story
New Kingston was developed on what had been the Knutsford Park racecourse, which closed in 1959. The shift of the business district from Downtown Kingston to this new uptown location accelerated through the 1960s and 70s as crime and political violence made Downtown increasingly difficult for commerce. By the 1980s, the financial and hotel industries had almost entirely relocated here, beginning a split between uptown and downtown Kingston that defines the city's geography to this day.
