Spreckels Organ Pavilion

The world's largest outdoor pipe organ, in Balboa Park — free Sunday concerts since 1915

The Spreckels Organ Pavilion at the centre of Balboa Park holds the world's largest outdoor pipe organ: 4,518 pipes in a horseshoe-shaped bandshell built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition. The pavilion seats 2,400 on curved stone benches facing the console, which the organist plays in full view of the audience.

Free Sunday concerts run from 2pm every week of the year, performed by the city's municipal organist or by guest performers. The concerts draw a reliably mixed crowd — neighbourhood regulars, park visitors, tourists, families — and the quality of the playing is consistently high. The acoustic properties of the outdoor space work surprisingly well; the sound carries across the park on still mornings.

The pavilion is near the centre of Balboa Park, a short walk from the Prado restaurants and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.

A story
The organ was donated to the city by sugar magnate John D. Spreckels in 1914, in time for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The condition of the gift was that the city hire a full-time municipal organist. San Diego has fulfilled that obligation for over a century — making it one of the few cities in the world that employs a full-time civic organist. The Sunday concerts, free and open to the public, have run without interruption since 1915 except for the years of World War II.
