Fleet Science Center

Hands-on science museum with an IMAX dome, in the heart of Balboa Park

The Fleet Science Center sits in Balboa Park near the Prado, in a 1973 building updated several times since. The museum is science-focused and interactive — most exhibits are hands-on, aimed at general audiences rather than specialists. The permanent collection covers physics, earth science, and technology; the temporary exhibits rotate frequently and are often stronger than the permanent galleries.

The IMAX dome theatre is the main draw for many visitors. The dome is 76 feet across; films shown here are specifically shot for the format and look genuinely different from standard cinema. The theatre runs both science documentaries and commercial films.

The Fleet sits adjacent to the Natural History Museum and the San Diego Museum of Art, making the central Balboa Park plaza a genuine museum district. Visitors can combine two or three institutions in a single day without covering the same ground twice.
