Whaley House

San Diego's most historic (and reportedly most haunted) house, built in 1857 on a former gallows site

The Whaley House in Old Town San Diego is the oldest two-storey brick structure in Southern California, built by merchant Thomas Whaley in 1857 and serving as a private home, commercial premises, and at various times the San Diego County courthouse, a granary, a billiard hall, and a theater. It is now maintained as a historic house museum and is considered one of the most authentically preserved Victorian homes in California.

The house tour covers the rooms as they appeared in the 1860s, furnished with original Whaley family pieces and period objects. The courtroom section — where actual legal proceedings took place — and the kitchen are particularly atmospheric. Ghost hunters visit regularly, and the house offers evening tours. Whether or not you believe in the paranormal, the history of early San Diego concentrated in these rooms is genuinely interesting.

A story
Thomas Whaley built his house in 1857 on the exact site of the gallows where "Yankee Jim" Robinson had been hanged just three years earlier. Robinson was a large man, and the drop wasn't long enough to break his neck — he reportedly choked to death over fifteen minutes. Whaley later claimed he heard heavy footsteps in the upstairs rooms that matched the description of the dead man's size. The U.S. Commerce Department recognizes the house as one of the most haunted in America.
