Kate Sessions Park

A neighbourhood park on the Pacific Beach mesa with panoramic views of Mission Bay and the downtown skyline

Kate Sessions Park sits on the mesa above Pacific Beach, named for the horticulturist who planted much of Balboa Park in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The park itself is a plain lawn with some mature trees — not remarkable in itself — but it occupies a bluff at the edge of the Pacific Beach mesa that delivers one of the best views in the city.

From the western edge of the park, the panorama takes in Mission Bay, the Pacific, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, and on a clear day the Coronado Islands in Mexico to the south. The downtown skyline is visible across the bay to the southeast. Hang gliders and paragliders launch from the park most afternoons, riding the thermal lift off the cliffs.

The park is quiet on weekday mornings and used primarily by the neighbourhood — dog walkers, families, people reading on the grass. It is a ten-minute walk from the Pacific Beach commercial strip on Garnet Avenue.
