The Spruce Street Suspension Bridge is a 375-foot pedestrian footbridge spanning a deep canyon in the Bankers Hill neighbourhood, built in 1912 and still in daily use. The bridge is wire-supported and bounces visibly when walked — the oscillation is mild but noticeable, and the views down into the eucalyptus-filled canyon and across to the Hillcrest skyline are best from the middle of the span.
The bridge is a locals' secret rather than a formal attraction: there is no marker, no ticket booth, and no interpretation. It simply sits at the end of Spruce Street, and you either know about it or you don't. It is a fifteen-minute walk from Balboa Park and can easily be combined with a walk through Hillcrest. The canyon below has a short hiking trail.
