Margaret Mitchell House

A modest 1899 Tudor Revival apartment building on Peachtree Street, where Margaret Mitchell lived from 1925 to 1932 and wrote the bulk of Gone with the Wind. The building was almost demolished and was twice nearly burned in arson attacks; it survives as part of the Atlanta History Center campus.

Tours include Mitchell's first-floor apartment and a small museum about the novel and the 1939 film. Half an hour is enough. The cinema-related material is more interesting than the literary side; Mitchell herself comes through as a sharp, troubled, complicated person.

A story
Mitchell wrote most of Gone with the Wind between 1926 and 1929 in this cramped ground-floor apartment, which she called 'the Dump'. She did not finish the novel for another six years; it was published in 1936, sold a million copies in six months, and won the Pulitzer in 1937.
