The five-block diagonal slash of Massachusetts Avenue northeast of downtown is the city's most concentrated arts and dining strip. Theatres (Phoenix, IndyFringe), galleries, independent shops, bars, and restaurants line the avenue from East Street to College Avenue. The area has been the focal point of the city's revival as a walkable centre over the past two decades.
The eight-foot-tall "Ann Dancing" LED sign at the Vermont Street intersection has become an unofficial mascot. Mass Ave is the natural Friday-night neighbourhood: dinner, a play, drinks, and walk home or scooter back to downtown.
