Madam Walker Legacy Center

The 1927 Art Deco theatre and office complex on Indiana Avenue, built as the headquarters of Madam C.J. Walker's hair-care empire. Walker was the first self-made female millionaire in the United States and ran her company from Indianapolis after moving from Delta, Louisiana. The interior is decorated with African and Egyptian motifs and was a cornerstone of the city's jazz and African-American business scene.

The Walker Theatre still hosts performances — Wes Montgomery played here, as did Duke Ellington — and the building is now a cultural centre with public exhibits on Walker's life. Worth combining with a walk along the rest of Indiana Avenue.
