Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the most famous race track in the world and the home of the Indy 500, run every Memorial Day weekend since 1911. The 2.5-mile oval is also a NASCAR venue (the Brickyard 400) and a Formula 1 host in years past. With a capacity of around 250,000 — over 400,000 for the 500 itself — it is the largest sports venue on the planet.

Outside race days, the IMS Museum on the infield holds dozens of historic Indy 500 winning cars and a separate gallery of motorcycles and engines. Track tours by bus include a stop in Victory Circle and (if conditions allow) a lap of the oval. Buy timed tickets online — busy in summer.

A story
The Brickyard's nickname comes from the 3.2 million bricks that paved the original 1909 track surface. Only a one-yard strip at the start/finish line remains — drivers kiss it after winning the Indy 500, a tradition started by NASCAR's Dale Jarrett in 1996.
