Indianapolis Zoo

A 64-acre zoo on the western edge of White River State Park, with around 1,400 animals. The orangutan centre with its eight-storey climbing tower is the standout — the orangutans use a system of "skywalk" cables to range across the campus, and watching them think their way around the route is one of the best ape exhibits in any American zoo.

The on-site botanical garden, the dolphin theatre, and the new International Orangutan Center exhibit fill an easy half-day. The zoo is the only US institution accredited simultaneously as a zoo, an aquarium, and a botanical garden.
