Indianapolis Canal Walk

A three-mile loop along the restored Central Canal threads through downtown from the USS Indianapolis Memorial north past the Eiteljorg Museum, the State Museum, and out to the 11th Street Bridge. It is the closest thing Indy has to a riverside promenade and is the obvious downtown evening walk.

You can rent pedal boats, kayaks, or surreys at the canal's south end. Several restaurants overlook the water. The canal was originally part of an 1830s Wabash & Erie Canal project that went spectacularly bankrupt; almost nothing of the original engineering survives.
