George Eastman Museum

The world's oldest photography museum, housed in the 50-room Colonial Revival mansion that Kodak founder George Eastman built in 1905 and lived in until his death in 1932. The collection spans the entire history of the medium — daguerreotypes, wet-plate collodions, early Kodak cameras, classic cinema reels, and contemporary digital work — and the research library holds over 400,000 photographs from some of the 20th century's most important photographers. The mansion itself is impeccably restored; the gardens are worth a walk in any season. There's a separate film archive and cinema showing classic and arthouse films. Allow two to three hours.

900 East Avenue. Open Tuesday–Sunday.
