Memorial Art Gallery

The University of Rochester's art museum is a small but genuinely encyclopedic collection: ancient Greek and Roman objects, medieval European altarpieces, Dutch Golden Age paintings, American folk art, and a strong showing of 20th-century work. Founded in 1913, it has the feel of a serious institution that hasn't had the money to be flashy, which is not a criticism — the galleries are uncrowded and the holdings are substantial for a mid-sized university museum. The medieval collection is a particular strength. The museum also organises the Clothesline Festival each September, one of the region's largest outdoor art fairs.

500 University Avenue. Closed Monday.
