Eastern State Penitentiary

Haunting ruins of America's most influential prison

Address 2027 Fairmount Avenue

The most influential prison ever built. Opened in 1829 as an experiment in total isolation — inmates were kept in solitary confinement twenty-four hours a day, the theory being that silence would lead to penitence. The audio tour is narrated by Steve Buscemi and walks you through Al Capone's preserved cell. Open year-round; at Halloween they run one of the country's biggest haunted-house events inside the cellblocks.
