Museum of the American Revolution

The best single museum for understanding the Revolutionary War — including Washington's actual command tent

The Museum of the American Revolution opened in 2017 in Old City, a block from Independence Hall, and immediately established itself as the best place in Philadelphia — perhaps in the country — to understand what the Revolutionary War actually was: who fought it, who was excluded from its promises, and what it felt like to live through it. The collection is serious, the interpretation honest, and the design excellent.

The centerpiece is a theatrical reveal at the heart of the museum: Washington's actual field marquee, the command tent he used throughout the war, unfurled in a darkened theater at the climax of a dramatic presentation that covers the Yorktown campaign. The tent is extraordinary — it has survived nearly 250 years and is displayed with appropriate reverence. The surrounding galleries address enslaved people who fought on both sides, the role of women, the experience of loyalists, and the involvement of Native American nations — subjects that older museums in the historic district have been slower to engage with. Allow three hours for a full visit.
