The large saltwater lagoon at the centre of the island is the social hub of Florianópolis. Its calm waters make it ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and there are rental outfits along the waterfront. The lagoon is ringed by restaurants and bars that fill up at lunch and stay busy through the evening; the nightlife here rivals the beach clubs in summer. The surrounding hills have good hiking trails with views over the lagoon and the Atlantic coast beyond.
