Casa de la Moneda

Colonial-era mint turned numismatics museum, next to Museo Botero

The Casa de la Moneda, attached to the Museo Botero complex on Calle 11, is Colombia's former royal mint. Founded by the Spanish crown in 1621, it was one of the most important mints in colonial Spanish America. The building has been converted into a museum tracing the history of money in Colombia, with an emphasis on the pre-Columbian and colonial periods.

The permanent collection includes coins, banknotes, gold working tools, and examples of the elaborate pieces struck here for the Spanish treasury. The physical plant — vaulted ceilings, stone floors, colonial courtyard — is as interesting as the objects. Free admission; the same opening hours as the adjacent Museo Botero.
