Casa de Nariño

Colombia's presidential palace, with free weekend tours and changing of the guard

The white neoclassical presidential palace on Carrera 8 just south of Plaza Bolivar occupies the site where the independence hero Antonio Nariño was born. The building is functional government, not a museum, but free guided tours run on Saturday and Sunday mornings — the only days the gates open to the public. Arrive early, as numbers are limited.

The changing of the guard, performed by the Presidential Guard Battalion in elaborate dress uniform, takes place at the main entrance on Sunday mornings and is worth timing a visit around. The palace is surrounded by gardens that are not publicly accessible, though the ceremonial front facing Carrera 8 is viewable from the street.
