The current Palacio de Justicia on the north side of Plaza Bolivar occupies the site of one of the most traumatic events in modern Colombian history. The original palace was seized by M-19 guerrillas in November 1985 and destroyed in the army's retaking; the rebuilt version opened in 1999.
The building is not open to the public, but it is worth knowing what happened here when you stand in the square looking at its glass and concrete facade. The scale of what occurred in 1985 — the burning building, the tanks entering the main doors, the disappearances — remains a live wound in Colombian public life.
