Iglesia Museo Santa Clara

17th-century church turned museum with extraordinarily ornate interior

Address Carrera 8 No 8-91

Now a museum, this 17th-century church has one of the most lavishly decorated interiors in Bogotá. Every surface is covered with paintings, gilded altarpieces, and carved wood — the result of Baroque excess taken to its logical conclusion. The contrast between the plain exterior and the explosion of colour inside is striking.

The church was built between 1629 and 1674 for a Franciscan convent. It's a short walk from the Plaza de Bolívar and well worth combining with a visit to the nearby Museo del Oro or La Candelaria.
