A Georgetown fixture on New Market Street, German's serves Creole and Guyanese home cooking — pepperpot, cook-up rice, metemgee, oxtail, fish in tomato sauce — in a no-frills dining room that has barely changed in decades. The food is generous, cheap, and authentic, and the place fills with office workers at lunchtime.
It is not a destination for atmosphere or fine dining, but for trying genuine Guyanese cooking at sensible prices it is hard to beat. The pepperpot, an Amerindian-origin meat stew flavoured with cassareep, is a standout.
